A company founded in Leith in 1863, gained popularity through its unique ceramic decanters.
One notable design featured a monk figurine with a removable head.
This distinctive packaging, produced primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. Basically, found its way to various international markets, including Italy, Peru, and the USA.
Today, collectors eagerly seek out Abbot’s Choice as a prized whisky, often finding it in auctions or museum collections. The figurine itself is crafted from brown ceramic, standing approximately 18 cm tall. Also, it wears a hooded robe with a cross necklace and holds a book in one hand.
The label on its chest proudly displays the inscription: “The Abbot’s Choice – Finest Old Scotch Whisky – John McEwan & Co Ltd – Distillers – Leith – Scotland.”
Moreover, renowned Italian artist Aldo Londi, who collaborated with the prestigious ceramic company Bitossi, designed the figurine.
