The GlenAllachie Ruby Port Pipe cask release is a special bottling, part of the third batch of their UK-exclusive single cask series. Basically, this limited-edition whisky is incredibly rare, with only 700 bottles available. It highlights the incredible depth of flavor that the GlenAllachie spirit develops after maturing in a Ruby Port Pipe for several years. The result is a complex, rich whisky that is bold and smooth.
Tasting Notes
Firstly, on the nose, the first impressions are dark and intense, featuring the rich aromas of 80-90% dark chocolate and freshly brewed coffee. These are accompanied by sweet, dried fruits like sultanas, plums, and figs. A thick, creamy texture adds to the luxurious feel, with a touch of sweetness from heather honey and muscovado sugar. A familiar mineralic character of GlenAllachie shines through, while crystallized ginger and orange peels bring a zesty brightness. Beneath these, there is a deep undercurrent of dark, almost burnt toffee and sticky raisins. Dried tobacco, crushed almonds, and a hint of spicy cinnamon and black pepper add warmth and complexity to the aroma.
Then, the taste is equally robust. The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy, coating the palate. Layers of dark chocolate and coffee return, blending seamlessly with the sweetness of caramel toffee and muscovado sugar. Rich molasses and treacle toffee provide a weighty richness. The dried fruits resurface, now stewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and orange peels. It’s like tasting a boozy Christmas cake. Almonds emerge again, this time in the form of marzipan. Despite its complexity, the whisky is highly drinkable, even at cask strength.
Finally, the whisky finishes, the mouthfeel lingers, sticking to the palate. The tannins leave a drying sensation, reminiscent of old leather. Spices such as crystallized ginger and freshly cracked black pepper intensify the flavor. The dark chocolate and coffee notes return, ensuring a long, satisfying finish.
