The 2006 decanter recounts the tale of Coldstream Guardsman ‘John Hatfield,’. Who faced charges for falling asleep. While on sentry duty at Windsor Castle during the reign of William III, King of England from 1689 to 1702.
His defense argued that he had heard ‘Great Tom’ of Westminster chime thirteen times at Midnight, some twenty miles away. This seemingly improbable claim was substantiated upon investigation, leading to his acquittal.
John Hatfield carried his alibi to the grave when he died in 1770 at the remarkable age of 105. His gravestone bore the inscription ‘Lucky Thirteen’.
