GRAND OLD PARR SET 12Y (3 bottles without boxes)
Grand Old Parr Set 12Y is a unique collection of Scottish whisky, consisting of three bottles: a 1L bottle, a 75cl bottle, and a 50cl bottle. This whisky has a 40% ABV, offering a robust experience with each pour. The blend provides a well-rounded selection for any whisky enthusiast, especially for those looking to explore ancient blends.
I first discovered Grand Old Parr as part of my whisky journey. After trying other ancient blends like Compass Box and King Edward, I decided to include Grand Old Parr in my exploration. It stood out for its classic, yet aged appeal. The whisky’s complexity becomes apparent when you allow it to breathe. Initially, I found the nose to be harsh, with a combination of sweet and bitter aromas that almost led me to discard the dram. However, after letting it sit for about 60 minutes, the scent evolved significantly. It transformed into a more pleasant experience, with fruity notes emerging and an overall enjoyable, dusty character.
However, the taste didn’t quite live up to the promising nose. I found it watery with a bittersweet edge. The mild oak spices tried to shine through but didn’t fully deliver the richness I had hoped for. Despite the whisky’s complexities, the taste felt a bit subdued, not as bold as I had expected from a 12-year-old blend.
The finish was the most disappointing aspect for me. It lingered with a medium-long duration but left an unpleasant oaky bitterness that overshadowed any lingering positive flavors. Overall, Grand Old Parr Set 12Y offers a decent experience, though it may not be for everyone. Its changing nose and subdued taste make it more of an acquired taste.
