Octomore 09.1 70CL: An enjoyably punchy and heavily peated single malt from Bruichladdich’s Octomore range. Octomore 09.1 sets out to challenge the idea that older means better when it comes to whisky, and it does so by offering up a 5 year old Islay whisky weighing in at 156 PPM, matured in ex-American whiskey casks. Pleasing, they’ve even let us know exactly where those casks came from – they were 51% Jim Beam, 26% Jack Daniel’s, 15% Clermont and 8% Old Grand-Dad casks.

Description

Octomore 09.1 70CL is designed to demonstrate that ingredients and distillation methods can create young whisky which is superior to those prized simply for their age. Matured in ex-American whiskey casks for five years, this is elegant, smoky and sweet with notes of toffee, earthy peat, fudge, coconut and rose petal.
The Octomore 9 series has been named dialogos (dialogue in ancient Greek) in recognition of the whisky’s ability to provoke debate amongst whisky enthusiasts.
Tasting notes:
AROMA:Smoke and oak, intense sweetness from the cask, vanilla, cinder toffee. The smoke is thick, velvety and vegetal, peat and earthy.
TASTE:Soft on the palate – no aggression, nutty, fudge, nougat, delicate coconut and rose petal floral.
FINISH:Long peat finish, hints of treacle, warm sand / salt.
